We all know magic in nwn is powerful. However, what kind of magic is used most of the time? Right, buffs and the "no save, you lose" crap like bigbys which should be nerfed to the ground really. Most of the normal spells do not work very well past level 20 though. There are multiple reasons for that:

  • Max vs average hp really hurts damage dealing spells
  • Most spells do not scale past 20
  • No properly implemented epic spellcasting (or anything else) that will actually give some epic spellcasting prowess.

Now, constructing epic spells and having spells above level 9 wouldn't really work in nwn due to both balance and mechanical reasons. I think it can be helped through different means though.

Evocation
The problem here is damage in epics. It shouldn't scale for Obsidian created clutches like IGMS though.

New feat: Epic Evoker
Requires: Epic spell focus (Evocation), Spellcraft 24
Damage of all evocation spells that deal energy damage is increased by (CL - 20) * 5 %. (Cold spells with Frost mage qualify, spells that deal magic damage originally like IGMS do not)

Conjuration
Again, the problem is that it does not scale well past 20. Summoned creatures suffer the most.

New feat: Epic Conjurer
Requires: Epic spell focus (Conjuration), Spellcraft 24
HD of creatures summoned by Gate and Elemental Swarm becomes equal to the conjuration caster level of the summoner (templates scale up to 40).

Divination
Apart from having very little divination spells and SF being utterly useless, power words do not scale into epic levels at all.

Double HP cap of power words (due to max hp vs avg) - I saw you have this planned)

As long as the caster is under an effect of the divination spell he gains +1 ab per focus in divination. +2 ac for arcane defense

New feat: Epic Diviner
Requires: Epic spell focus (Diviner), Spellcraft 24
HP cap of power words is increased by (CL - 20) * 5 % (max 50%).

Necromancy
This school actually works pretty well as is. However, a lot of creatures are immune to its effects. Something along the lines of epic precision, but for necromancy, will work nicely.

New feat: Epic Necromancer
Requires: Epic spell focus (Necromancer), Spellcraft 24
Your necromancy spells ignore immunity to death effects, ability damage and energy drain. However, ability damage and energy drain effects are halved vs immune creatures. Creatures immune to death effects gain a +5 bonus to save.

Enchantment
Same as necromancy, but worse overall.

New feat: Epic Enchanter
Requires: Epic spell focus (Enchantment), Spellcraft 24
Your echantment spells ignore immunity to mind affecting abilities. However, immune creatures gain a +5 bonus to save.

Transmutation
Works pretty well, with buffs and save or suck mainly. May need some help in terms of DCs though.

New feat: Epic Transmuter
Requires: Epic spell focus (Transmutation), Spellcraft 24
If a creature successfully saves against your transmutation spell it must immidiately make a second save and take the result of the second roll.

Illusion
Scales very well, but offensive spells usually require to beat 2 saves, so again some help with DCs might be needed.

New feat: Epic Illusionist
Requires: Epic spell focus (Illusion), Spellcraft 24
Your Illusion DC is increased by 2.

Abjuration
SF abjuration gives almost zero benefit right now. Make it add +1 to dispel checks per added DC (can exceed caps). Displels do not scale into epics, with the exception of disjunction.

New feat: Epic Abjurer
Requires: Epic spell focus (Abjuration), Spellcraft 24
Adds +2 to dispel checks (can exceed caps).

Just a suggestion, but I think this would make the game more fun and add more playstyle options like conjurer who summons meatshields, blaster wizard etc.

Spell casting DC doesnt scale properly. +3 dc at lvl 29, + int score increase, vs save low +4 lvl 30 save high + 5 lvl 30 + ability score. +1 dc every 2 lvls would be better imo.

Every spell, well most spells that sucks, should have a 50 % increase by lvl 30, because 10 lvls more is 50 % of 20 lvls.

Fireball 10d6 by lvl 20? +1d6 damage at lvl 22, 24, 26, 28, 30 for a 15d6 fireball by lvl 30. Etc etc. Lots of work toying with the thing tho. But yeah. casters gets shafted on the long run, compared to a maximum lvl 20 setting where they re very, very strong.

Thers's an option of adding energy substitution and admixture from pnp to implement spell damage boost. Does not require any custom stuff. But this would probably overpower low level blasters beyound any means. Pehaps make it an epic feat?
